AS/NZS 1668.1 VENTILATION AND AIR-CON FIRE AND SMOKE CONTROL, UPDATE

 Fire-Ducts-Large

AS/NZS 1668.1: 1998 The use of ventilation and air-conditioning in buildings - Fire and smoke control in multi-compartment buildings, has been updated to a 2015 version with a new name, AS/NZS 1668.1: 2015, The use of ventilation and air-conditioning in buildings - Fire and smoke control in buildings.

NZBC C Acceptable Solutions

However, AS/NZS 1668.1: 1998, is cited and recognised by the Acceptable Solutions NZBC C/AS1 to AS7, but AS/NZS 1668.1: 2015 has not yet been cited by the NZBC.  So at this point in time the 1998 version is the means of compliance with the Acceptable Solutions, even though it is has been superseded by Standards NZ.

NZBC C Verification Method VM2

Although not cited in NZBC C/VM2, either AS/NZS 1668.1: 1998 or AS/NZS 1668.1: 2015 may be used for ventilation and air-conditioning fire and smoke control.

Changes to AS/NZS 1668.1

The following is a short overview of changes from 1998 to 2015 versions:

  • Hot layer smoke control added
  • Function of car park ventilation revised
  • Detection & initiation of smoke control systems moved to AS 1682 series
  • Mandatory requirements for baseline data included
  • Flame & spark arrestance in some kitchen exhausts included
  • Appendices added for subduct use, and testing exit pressurization systems
  • Some clarification of existing text

Masterspec

Until the NZBC cites the new 2015 version of these Standards, or MBIE issues a directive, Masterspec will continue to use the compliant 1998 version. If you want to use the 2015 version with the Acceptable Solutions consult with the BCA as to their requirements before changing the specification.

All related Masterspec work sections have been amended with "1998" being added to the Standards number. Remember if a Standard has no year stated it is automatically the latest version (refer 1233 REFERENCED DOCUMENTS, clause 1.1).

Masterspec will monitor the situation and keep you informed on developments.
