STEEL STRUCTURES - NZS 3404.1: 1997 VERSES NZS 3404.1: 2009
This article covers the two consecutive Steel Structures Standards:
- NZS 3404.1: 1997 Steel Structures Standard (old Standard)
- NZS 3404.1: 2009 Steel structures Standard - Materials, fabrication, and construction (new Standard)
Masterspec often gets user enquires as to why we use an old standard in our structural steelwork sections. The answer is that NZS 3404.1: 1997 is cited in NZBC B1/VM1, and its replacement, NZS 3404.1: 2009, is not cited. Which means if you use NZS 3404.1: 2009 it would be an alternative solution.
Masterspec has had a few requests from Structural Engineers, who do occasionally want to use the new version, to add 2009 references to the work sections to try and help out with section editing. If an existing section clause references a clause or section in 3404.1: 1997, where possible we have now added a guidance note that references a similar clause or section in NZS 3404.1: 2009. Unfortunately this does not always work as the two Standards do not necessarily cover exactly the same items. So as with all specification customisations the appropriateness of any reference needs to be checked against specific project requirements.
If you need to compare the two versions further, a good starting point is NZS 3404.1: 2009, Appendix B, which list clauses from NZS 3404.1: 1997 (and NZS 3404.2: 1997 commentary) that are superseded by clauses in NZS 3404.1: 2009.
Masterspec has updated all the Structural Steelwork and related sections with the appropriate guidance text for the alternative use of NZS 3404.1: 2009.
