bituFLAME® is recommended as a torch on tanking membrane for basement foundation and vertical walls in low to medium hydrostatic applications as a single layer system, and in medium to high hydrostatic applications as a double layer system.  Refer to 4131WP WPS BITUFLAME TORCH ON TANKING.

 

rawMAT Bentonite is the most secure tanking system, use in high to extreme hydrostatic conditions.  Refer to 4131WR WPS RAWMAT BENTONITE TANKING.

WARRANTY - APPLICATOR

Provide an applicator’s warranty for the system against failure and failure to follow installation specifications

Waterproofing work to be carried out by experienced, fully qualified applicators approved by Waterproofing Systems NZ Ltd to install the bituBOND® tanking system.

Substitutions are not permitted to any specified Waterproofing Systems NZ Ltd system, or associated components and products.

Performance

PRE INSTALLATION MEETING

The main contractor to convene a meeting between the applicator, contractor and all associated consultants to ensure all parties have reviewed the plans, detailed drawings and specification and that all parties fully understand the installation and know what is required for effective performance of the system.

SPECIAL DETAILS

Where a standard detail does not exist, or if a standard detail cannot be applied, an approved alternative must be obtained from Waterproofing Systems NZ Ltd before proceeding with the installation.

WATER-TIGHTNESS

Accept responsibility for the water-tight performance of the completed membrane installation including all penetrations.

PRESSURE RATING

Obtain a Geotech soil test report and identify if there are any water conditions which need to be allowed for or brought to the engineer's attention.  Ensure the system is capable of sustaining the designated water pressure head.  Refer to SELECTIONS for the designated water pressure head.

Where applicable confirm the designated water pressure head with the design engineer, bituBOND® should only be used in low hydrostatic tanking situations.  Installing bituBOND®  to basement walls with another DPM product used under the slab is suitable for non-tanking applications.

QUALITY ASSURANCE

Maintain quality necessary to assure that work is performed in accordance with this specification and the qualifying requirements of Waterproofing Systems NZ Ltd.

 

The applicator must complete substrate readiness check sheets and installation Quality Control check sheets as the job progresses on site and are completed fully and faithfully for each installation area.  These must be available for inspection or a copy on request by Waterproofing Systems NZ Ltd.

SELF ADHESIVE TANKING MEMBRANE

BituBOND® an SBS bitumen self-adhesive 1.5mm thick membrane with cross laminated polyethylene carrier to the top side and an adhesive layer protected by siliconized release plastic to the underside. Supplied in 1m wide x 20m long rolls.

bituBOND® should only be used in low hydrostatic tanking situations.  Installing bituBOND® tanking to basement walls with another DPM product used under the slab is suitable for non-tanking applications.

BituPRIME® solvent borne, bitumen based, quick drying primer.  Supplied in 20 litre pails

For use on concrete and masonry substrates.

BITUBOND® CONTACT ADHESIVE

BituBOND® Contact adhesive, solvent contact adhesive for masonry substrates where an almost instant bond is required.  Supplied in 20 litre pails.

For use on concrete and masonry substrates where cool conditions prevent the use of BituPRIME® solvent borne primer.  BituBOND® Contact adhesive allows a 20 minute tack and instant bond in cool conditions.

BITUBOND® WATER BASED PRIMER ADHESIVE

BituBOND® Primer adhesive, a water borne pressure sensitive primer adhesive.  Supplied in 10 litre pails.

For use on polystyrene block substrates.

bituBOND® Sealant, a bituminous sealant available in 310ml cartridge, specially formulated to be compatible with bituBOND® membrane.

WPS MS 40 single component, high strength, polyurethane sealant.

Used as part of a system to seal penetrations and for termination bar installation.

WPS BITUMEN GENERAL PURPOSE SEALANT

WPS Bitumen General Purpose Sealant is a bitumen sealant that is 100% compatible with the bituBOND® polymer.

Used along all knife cut edges  and for sealing bituBOND® membrane into chase in substrate.  Used for sealant directly in contact with bituBOND® material.

GRIPSET DM POWDER & GRIPSET 11Y LATEX WP ADDITIVE

Gripset DM is a premium grade cement based compound used in conjunction with Gripset 11Y Latex Waterproof additive.

Used .in the preparation of joints to polystyrene block substrates and to repair any cracks / defects in concrete substrates.

FLEXIBLE CEMENTITIOUS MEMBRANE

Gripset 2P, a SBS two component rubberised liquid membrane system used in pipe penetration detailing and ground transition detailing. BituBOND system is then installed over the Gripset pipe collars.

Used to as part of a system to seal pipe penetrations and ground transition detailing.

Gripset Elastoproof collar, size to suit penetration.

EXPOL POLYSTYRENE DRAINAGE PROTECTION BOARD

Expol Styrodrain polystyrene drainage boards made from 100% recycled expanded polystyrene (EPS) designed for retaining and basement walls.  StyroDrain allows water to easily drain water down to the drain coil system.  Supplied in 2400mm x 1200mm x 90mm thick sheets.

Membrane has discharge channels providing a drainage system that prevents the gap from clogging up with finer soil particles.

3.1
GENERALLY

Comply with the requirements and instructions of Waterproofing Systems NZ Ltd.

3.2
LAYOUT

If not detailed on the drawings, confirm the layout to suit site conditions and Waterproofing Systems NZ Ltd specifications.  Pre-plan the work to keep the number of membrane laps to an absolute minimum.

3.3
CHECK SUBSTRATE

Check that the substrate will allow work of the required standard.  Complete any remedial work identified before commencing any work.  Substrate to comply with performance requirements of the NZBC.

Preparation
3.4
STORAGE

Take delivery of rolls undamaged and include for site handling facilities where required.  Stack on end, off the ground on a level surface, out of sunlight and above 5°C and with accessories.  Do not allow rolls to become flat or to be crushed.

3.5
SUBSTRATE CONDITION

Ensure that the substrate is in a suitable condition to allow work of the required standard.  Ensure all surfaces are smooth, clean, dry and free from oil, dust and dirt with any holes flushed and any projections ground off and no sharp materials that will cause damage to the membrane or allow water to track behind the membrane.  Check moisture content not commence installation until readings for the whole area show 75% relative humidity or less.

bituBOND® can be used on both concrete and polystyrene block substrates.

3.6
SUBSTRATE PREPARATION - PRE-CAST CONCRETE

Ensure all concrete pre-cast joints are flush pointed to the termination height of the tanking and concrete pre-cast wall to foundation joints must be fully grouted flush with the tilt slab exposed surface.

 

Fill tie holes flush and smooth, and repair any surface cracks or defects with Gripset DM mixed with Gripset 11Y Latex Waterproof Additive.  Grind off steps or sharp protrusions caused by formwork joints.

SUBSTRATE PREPARATION - MASONRY

Ensure all mortar joints are flush pointed.  Repair any surface cracks or defects with Gripset DM mixed with Gripset 11Y Latex Waterproof Additive if required.

SUBSTRATE PREPARATION - POLYSTYRENE BLOCKS

Fill the manufacturing block indents and grooves with Gripset DM mixed with Gripset 11Y Latex Waterproof Additive, ensure any dents or recesses are flush pointed.

REMOVE OTHER FORMWORK

Ensure that formwork has been removed or partially removed from the other face(s) to the membrane face, to the extent that it allows moisture to escape from the concrete to ensure no vapour pressure develops beneath the membrane.

INTERNAL & EXTERNAL CORNERS

External corners to be chamfered and flashed with bituBOND® membrane.  Install BituFLAME® extruded bitumen fillets to all internal junctions.

All flashing, chamfering and coving to Waterproofing Systems NZ Ltd specifications.

CONSTRUCTION JOINTS
  • Flush foundation wall construction joints to be flashed with a 200mm wide strip of bituBOND® tanking membrane.
  • Toe out foundation joints install bituFLAME extruded bitumen fillets and then flash with a 200mm wide strip of bituBOND tanking membrane.
  • Masonry block foundation joints (10mm) insert a 10mm backer rod 5mm deep, infill flush with WPS MS40 PU sealant, flash over with a 200mm wide strip of bituBOND membrane.
3.12
PRIME CONCRETE

Prime insitu concrete, concrete tilt panels and masonry block substrates thoroughly with bituPRIME® at a coverage rate of 5 - 6m2 per litre, depending on the porousness of the substrate,  ensuring a good even coverage and penetration. as recommended by Waterproofing Systems NZ Ltd.  Use BituBOND® Contact adhesive if due to cool conditions the use of bituPRIME® is not suitable.

PRIME POLYSTYRENE

Prime polystyrene block substrates thoroughly with bituBOND® Primer adhesive at a coverage rate of 3m2 per litre ensuring a good even coverage and penetration as recommended by Waterproofing Systems NZ Ltd.

ALLOW PRIMER TO DRY

Allow the primer to dry as recommended by Waterproofing Systems NZ Ltd.  Do not prime more than can be covered in one working day.  Prevent contamination of the primed surface prior to application of the membrane.

Installation
3.15
WEATHER CONDITIONS

Install bituBOND® membranes only in fair weather with air temperature above 5°C.  Do not lay membrane in wet or misty conditions.  In cooler temperatures use a hot air gun to warm the back of the rolls during installation.

3.16
LAYING OUT BITUBOND®

Lay out and allow the bituBOND® membrane to relax for 30 minutes prior to laying.

3.17
INSTALL BITUBOND®

Fully adhere bituBOND® membrane to the substrate to Waterproofing Systems NZ Ltd installation specifications.  Install bituBOND® by progressively peeling off the release plastic and firmly placing and pressure rolling the membrane onto the substrate.  Roll to ensure good adhesion.

3.18
BITUBOND® LAP JOINTS

Overlap the installed adjoining bituBOND sheet  by 100mm continuing the lapping system on all sheet edge and end laps joints at 100mm overlap. To ensure full bonding ensure the exposed lap joint area is kept free of foreign matter until the lap joint is closed. Apply pressure and over roll the lap joints directly after installing each sheet.

Ensure lap areas are kept free of foreign matter that could interfere with lap integrity.

BITUBOND® FLOOR TO WALL JUNCTION

For a full bituBOND® tanking envelope extend the bituBOND® 200mm beyond the perimeter of the footing and ensure the 200mm flap is adequately protected from damage during construction of the walls and that foreign matter is not able to contaminate this critical lap area.

 

When the wall is struck, for flush foundations with a vertical wall, flash with a 200mm wide bituBOND® membrane flashing across the junction.  When wall is struck, for toe out foundation, install using a blow torch a preformed extruded bituFLAME® bitumen fillet at the internal junction followed by a 200mm wide bituBOND® membrane flashing centralized over the extruded fillet.  Bring the protected under slab bituBOND® membrane up over the foundation and onto the foundation ready for the vertical wall bituBOND® installation and jointing to it in both situations.

 

Where DPM is the under slab waterproofing, install a 200mm wide under flashing centralized over the floor  to wall junction, end laps 200mm.  Install the wall membrane down over the top of the under flashing to the bottom of the footing.  Dress the bottom edge to form a sound seal.  Bring the DPM up the wall, over the top of the top of the bituBOND® membrane and tape to the face of the membrane.

PENETRATIONS

Seal and waterproof pipe penetrations to Waterproofing Systems NZ Ltd requirements.  Install a backer rod between the pipe penetration and the substrate, install WPS MS 40 sealant into the recess backing up on the backer rod and terminating at the external wall finish.  Using Gripset 2P install a Elastoproof pipe collar over coating and sealing into place. As part of the bituBOND® SBS application flash over the Gripset components and secure with a stainless steel metal ring clamp to the pipe.

Not suitable for steel pipe penetrations, refer to Waterproofing Systems NZ Ltd for advise.

3.21
TERMINATION INTO CHASE

Apply bituBOND® membrane  to all perimeter edges turning into the 20mm x 10mm chase. Install a non-corrosive chase flashing which fits tightly into the formed chase recess. Install a 10mm baker rod, then install a bead of WPS MS40 sealant formed to  neatly to divert water over the chase flashing.

COMPRESSION TERMINATION BAR

Terminate bituBOND® membrane cut edges at all perimeter edges with a 10mm bead of bituBOND® bitumen sealant, fit a WPS 30mm wide termination Bar centralized over the membrane, cut edge and sealant, then mechanically fix to provide a compression seal.

TRANSITION TERMINATION WITH GRIPSET 2P

Install Gripset 2P membrane in accordance with manufacturer's requirements to the ground transition area prior to the installation of bituBOND® membrane.  Install bituBOND® membrane lapped 200mm over Gripset 2P and terminate bituBOND® membrane perimeter edge with bituBOND® bitumen sealant and bituBOND® Termination Bar centralized over the membrane, cut edge and sealant, then mechanically fix to provide a compression seal.

 

Install 100mm wide butylFLASH tape over the 30mm termination bar centralized on the bituBOND and Gripset 2P membrane systems. WPS Hi-Build coating can be applied from beneath the cladding system down to the butylFLASH tape forming a full tanking system.

Protection

PROTECT UNDERSLAB SURFACES

After laying is complete the membrane can be protected until the floor slab is poured by covering the tanking with DPM sheets.This situation arises when there is an extended delay between the membrane installation and the placement of the floor slab or where vehicles and other construction machinery is being taken over the membrane.

INSTALL PROTECTION SHEETS - CORFLUTE

Neatly fit 3.3mm thick corflute boards dressing down over foundation footings with 50mm wide overlapping joints taped with 80mm wide bituBOND® tape.  Seal the top edge of Corflute with bituBOND® tape to prevent back fill getting between the bituBOND® and coreflute sheets.

Delete if using V Drain or polystyrene protection sheets.

INSTALL POLYSTYRENE DRAINAGE PROTECTION

Install selected polystyrene drainage protection boards with edges butted and taped closed with 80mm bituBOND® tape.

Delete if using V Drain or Corflute protection sheets.

Drainage & Backfill

DRAINAGE, BACKFILL AND COMPACTION

Install drainage coil fitted with a filter sock, position 150mm out from the foundation and 200mm below floor wall construction joint in accordance with Waterproofing Systems NZ Ltd detailed drawings.  Ensure the drain coil is installed to the required falls and connects into the storm water system.  Surround the drainage coil with 10mm to 15mm stones before the back fill is installed.  Back fill with free draining stone together with 30% grit sand fines to ensure compaction.  Compact at 600mm intervals ensuring mechanical services and pipes are not broken during compaction.

Compact at 600mm intervals to a compaction rate of 95% Proctor.

The drainage system should be designed to cope effectively with the anticipated volumes of water on the site.

PROTECT PIPE AND SERVICES PENETRATIONS

Back fill around all pipe and service penetrations with grit sand to protect these services from mechanical damage during compaction.

Completion

PARTIAL COMPLETION

As sections of the tanking are completed, arrange for inspection of the work before covering with protection sheets, walls, or slabs.  Complete the applicator's substrate readiness check sheets and Quality Control Sheets manually or use the WPS phone App, QC system on site which can be directly e-mailed with site photos, provide to them with the warranty application for the issuing of a Materials Warranty.

ACCEPTANCE
  • Arrange for an inspection of the completed work.
  • Complete the applicator's Quality Control sheets manually or by the phone App and provide to them for the issuing of the Materials Warranty.
  • Protect the membrane until completion of the contract works.

CLEAN UP

Clean up as the work proceeds.

LEAVE

Leave this work in a sound condition, free of any defect.

REMOVE

Remove debris, unused materials and elements from the site.
