STEELFORMERS RAINWATER SYSTEMS
1
GENERAL

If you have pre-customised this work section using the "questions and answers" provided as part of the downloading process, it may be necessary to amend some clauses to suit the final project-specific version.

The section must still be checked and customised to suit the project being specified, by removing any other irrelevant details and adding project-specific details and selections.

This section relates to Steelformers rainwater disposal systems including metal fascia, spouting, gutters and downpipes.

Modify or extend the above description to suit the project being specified.

Some specifiers prefer to group general rainwater plumbing work - such as flashings to roof penetrations, windows, etc - together with the supply and installation of spouting and downpipes.  While this can be a convenient arrangement, especially on smaller projects, there are dangers in such an approach, in potentially affecting guarantees or manufacturer's warrantees on roofing and/or window work.  In terms of co-ordination, such flashing and sealing work is also best grouped with the primary enclosure element concerned.

It is important to ensure that all personnel on site have access to accurate, up to date technical information on the many products, materials and equipment used on a project.  In most cases individual products are not used in isolation, but form part of a building process.  Also a particular manufacturer's and/or supplier's requirements for handling, storage, preparation, installation, finishing and protection of their product can vary from what might be considered the norm.  Access to technical information can help overcome this potential problem.

3.2
ROUTINE MATTERS

Refer to 1250 TEMPORARY WORKS & SERVICES for protection requirements.
Refer to 1270 CONSTRUCTION for requirements relating to defective or damaged work, removal of protection and cleaning.

Use this standard generic clause and if appropriate add additional special requirements.

Installation
3.4
INSTALLATION GENERALLY

Install to NZMRM CoP recommendations where not otherwise specified.

3.5
STANDARDS AND TOLERANCES

Refer to the general section 1270 CONSTRUCTION for general requirements.

Amend this clause to describe specific standards and tolerances to be achieved in carrying out this part of the work.  Although such tolerances are typically included in standards (NZS, AS/NZS etc) in certain circumstances it is worth restating these in this clause.

3.6
THERMAL MOVEMENT

Make adequate provision in the fixing and jointing of the spouting for thermal movement in the length of the spouting.  Provide an expansion joint in steel spouting and gutters over 18 metres in length.

Maximum gutter-length is determined by the type of metal and its colour.  An expansion joint can be a rainwater head or a saddle flashing.  Modify this clause when using copper or aluminium.

3.7
CORROSION

Separate metals subject to electrolytic action from each other and from treated timber, concrete and other lime substances by space, painting of surfaces, taping, or separator strips.  Do not allow copper downpipes to discharge onto lower galvanized or zinc aluminium coated steel roofs.

Check compatibility of metals used for rainwater goods, against the materials being used for roofing and flashings.

Installation - metal fascia
3.8
INSTALL METAL FASCIA

Install concealed fascia brackets to all rafters with either screws or nails to a level line.  Fit 10m maximum lengths of metal fascia to the brackets.  Join metal fascia with silicone sealant and 4mm rivets at 150mm maximum centres and form corner detailing to Steelformers requirements, refer to SELECTIONS.

Installation - metal spouting / gutters
3.9
INSTALL METAL SPOUTING / GUTTERS

Establish minimum falls necessary (minimum 1:500, 2mm in 1 metre) to outlets to prevent ponding and screw fix brackets, true to line, refer to SELECTIONS for bracket spacing.  Brackets must also be located at all stopends and at rainwater heads.  Form all corners and stop ends on site.  Lap spouting joints a minimum of 40mm, silicone seal between surfaces and pop rivet to the manufacturer's recommendations.  Ensure the joint is fixed over its full girth.  Cut out neatly for and fit the pre-formed downpipe dropper and rivet and seal around the joint.  All installation to NZMRM CoP recommendations.

3.10
INSTALL COPPER SPOUTING / GUTTERS

From high points fix brackets true-to-line to give a fall of 1mm every 2 metres to outlets.  Allowing for necessary expansion, assemble and fit spouting to brackets complete with outlets.  Lap all joints 40mm and solder, ensuring the joint is soldered throughout the full girth and extent of the lap.

3.11
COPPER COMPATIBILITY

Copper or brass should not be in direct contact with other metals, or have runoff water discharging onto other metals except stainless steel.

Installation - rainwater heads

3.17
INSTALL DOWNPIPE SPREADERS

Install downpipe spreaders where required to NZBC E2/AS1.  Provide spreaders to downpipes that discharge onto a lower roof.  Ensure spreaders do not discharge directly over fasteners or laps and are clear of roof penetrations.  Spreaders to have four holes half the diameter of the downpipe.

Note: Upper roofs should drain via downpipes directly to ground level where possible.  The alternative to a spreader is to direct an upper level downpipe into a rainwater head.

Completion & Commissioning
3.18
COMPLETION MATTERS

Refer to 1270 CONSTRUCTION for completion requirements and if required commissioning requirements.

Use this standard generic clause and if appropriate add additional special requirements.
