bituBOND® should only be used in damp proofing low hydrostatic tanking situations. Installing bituBOND® to basement walls with another DPM product used under the slab is suitable for non-tanking applications. Refer to 4131WP WPS BITUBOND SELF-STICK TANKING.

It is important to ensure that all personnel on site have access to accurate, up to date technical information on the many products, materials and equipment used on a project. Waterproofing Systems NZ Ltd issue warranties on the basis that installations comply with their specification requirements and their on-site Quality Control process has been completed. Where a project is registered, WPS will provide assistance in design and product selection.

Waterproofing work to be carried out by experienced, fully qualified applicators approved by Waterproofing Systems NZ Ltd to install the bituFLAME® tanking system, and who hold a Licensed Building Practitioner's license for external membrane applications.
Substitutions are not permitted to any specified Waterproofing Systems NZ Ltd system, or associated components and products.
The main contractor to convene a meeting between the applicator, contractor and all associated consultants to ensure all parties have reviewed the plans, detailed drawings and specification and fully understand the installation and know what is required for effective performance of the system.
Where a standard detail does not exist, or if a standard detail cannot be applied, an approved alternative must be obtained from Waterproofing Systems NZ Ltd before proceeding with the installation.
Accept responsibility for the water-tight performance of the completed bituFLAME® tanking system installation including all penetrations to comply with Waterproofing Systems NZ Ltd product manual recommendations.
Obtain a Geotech soil test report and identify if there are any ground water conditions which need to be allowed for or brought to the engineer's attention. Ensure the system is capable of sustaining the designated water pressure head. Refer to SELECTIONS for the designated water pressure head.
Where applicable confirm the designated water pressure head with the design engineer, bituFLAME® torch on tanking membrane is for use in low to medium hydrostatic applications. For high hydrostatic situations a Rawmat™ bentonite system is recommended.
Maintain quality necessary to assure that work is performed in accordance with this specification and the qualifying requirements of Waterproofing Systems NZ Ltd.
The applicator must complete the substrate readiness check sheets and installation quality control check sheets as the job progresses on site are completed fully and faithfully for each installation area. These must be available for inspection or a copy on request by Waterproofing Systems NZ Ltd.
Select the manufacturer and brand for this work and then use the PRODUCTS and EXECUTION clauses required for the particular system. Consult the manufacturer for particular requirements.
Note in particular that bituFLAME® torch on sheet products require a solid substrate. Note: Rawmat bentonite can be installed on compacted sub base, sheet piles, sacrificial shutters and on concrete substrates. Rawmat can be installed onto precast panels and can also be installed on damp substrates or in inclement weather. Refer to 4131WR WPS RAWMAT BENTONITE TANKING.

Typically BituFlame AR Is used as part of a two layer system in conjunction with 3mm bituFLAME® smooth finish – base sheet. For non-critical applications such as plaster boxes it can be used as a single layer systems over concrete.

BituBOND® Tape is a 80mm wide self-adhesive flashing tape. Supplied in 20m long rolls.
Used for taping protection board / sheet joints.
Comply with the requirements and instructions of Waterproofing Systems NZ Ltd.
If not detailed on the drawings, confirm the layout to suit site conditions and Waterproofing Systems NZ Ltd specifications. Pre-plan the work to keep the number of membrane laps to an absolute minimum.
Maintain water level minimum 300mm below the level of the work area during the progress of the tanking work and until protective loading coats and walls are complete and fully set.
Use this clause if there is water present. Modify to suit the circumstances if it is not part 2241 EXCAVATION.
Install a certified drainage system to remove water from foundations. Ensure drain is protected with geotextile cloth to prevent it clogging with fines, and that it is correctly located, 150mm from the membrane and 200mm below the foundation/wall construction joint in accordance with Waterproofing Systems NZ Ltd requirements.
The drainage system should be designed to cope effectively with the anticipated volumes of water on the site.
Check that the substrate will allow work of the required standard. Complete any remedial work identified before commencing any work. Substrate to comply with performance requirements of the NZBC.
Take delivery of rolls undamaged and include for site handling facilities where required. Stack on end, off the ground on a level surface, out of sunlight and above 5°C and with accessories. Do not allow rolls to become flat or to be crushed.
Ensure that the substrate is in a suitable condition to allow work of the required standard. Ensure all surfaces are smooth, clean, dry and free from dust and dirt with no projections of sharp materials that will cause damage to the membrane or allow water to track behind the membrane. Ensure concrete block mortar compressive strength 15MPa at 28 days. For all substrate types the exposed surface must be flush at joints and smooth enough to achieve a full surface bond.
Co-ordinate with selected concrete masonry section to ensure requirements for flush pointing and block mortar compressive strength 15MPa at 28 days is included.
Wire brush to remove projections. Remove all debris, leaving the surface dust-free, oil-free and clean, with nothing that could diminish the adhesion of primers. Grind off steps or sharp protrusions caused by formwork joints. Check for live cracks and if identified install a slip layer of 3mm thick bituFLAME®.
Waterproofing Systems NZ Ltd recommends a high strength repair mortar to be used for any substrate repairs and to fill any gaps in the surface or between concrete panels.
Ensure all concrete pre-cast joints are flush pointed to the termination height of the tanking and concrete pre-cast wall to foundation joints must be fully grouted flush with the tilt slab exposed surface. Fill tie holes flush and smooth, and repair any surface cracks or defects with Gripset DM mixed with Gripset 11Y Latex Waterproof Additive. Grind off steps or sharp protrusions caused by formwork joints.
Ensure all mortar joints are flush pointed. Repair any surface cracks or defects with Gripset DM mixed with Gripset 11Y Latex Waterproof Additive if required.
Fill the manufacturing block indents and grooves with Gripset DM mixed with Gripset 11Y Latex Waterproof Additive , ensure any dents or recesses are flush pointed.
Ensure that formwork has been removed or partially removed from the other face(s) to the membrane face, to the extent that it allows moisture to escape from the concrete to ensure no vapour pressure develops beneath the membrane.
Chamfer external corners and flash, install bituFLAME® extruded bitumen fillets to internal corners and upstands and then overlay with a 3mm thick x 150mm wide bituFLAME® sand finished under-flashing.
Flash construction joints with a 200mm wide bandage strip of bituFLAME® sand finished, includes foundation wall joint, external and internal corners.
Check moisture is within specification, remove concrete dust and contamination; then prime insitu concrete, pre-cast concrete and masonry blocks thoroughly with bituPRIME®. Ensure they are sufficiently cured and dry to permit the intended performance of the bituPRIME®. Apply bituPRIME® ensuring a good even coverage. Apply at a rate of approximately 5 m2 per litre.
Apply bituBOND® primer adhesive at a rate of approximately 3m2 per litre.
Install BITUFLAME® membranes only in fair weather with air temperature above 7°C.
Do not lay membrane in wet or misty conditions.
Unroll the BITUFLAME® membrane to relax for 30 minutes prior to laying. In cooler conditions additional time may be required for the membrane to fully relax.
Control heat to ensure the membrane is fully installed to the substrate with all laps properly formed. In two layer systems ensure full bonding between the two layers. Do not overheat the membrane.
Install bituFLAME® 3mm membrane sand finished as a single layer, fully torched applied to the substrate with 100mm edge laps and 150mm end laps. Check all laps are fully bonded and the installation is neat and tidy.
Waterproofing Systems NZ Ltd recommends the use of two layer bituFLAME® systems to give greater durability and to reduce the risk of water ingress due to damage during steel fixing etc.
Install bituFLAME® 3mm membrane smooth as a base sheet, fully torched applied to the substrate with 100mm edge laps and 150mm end laps. Check all laps are fully bonded and the installation is neat and tidy.
Install bituFLAME® 3mm membrane sand as a finished cap sheet, fully torched applied, with all sheet joints off set and centered over the base sheet forming the finished 2 layer system. All end laps must also be off set on the base sheet with all edge laps 100mm wide and end laps 150mm wide. Check all laps on completion and leave as a neat and tidy finish.
Install bituFLAME® 4mm membrane antiroot sand finished in a single layer system , fully torched applied to the substrate with 100mm edge laps and 150mm end laps. Check all laps are fully bonded and the installation is neat and tidy.
Install bituFLAME® 3mm membrane smooth as a base sheet, fully torched applied to the substrate with 100mm edge laps and 150mm end laps. Check all laps are fully bonded and the installation is neat and tidy.
Install bituFLAME® 4mm antiroot as a finished cap sheet, fully torched applied with all sheet joints off set and centered over the base sheet forming the finished 2 layer system. All end laps must also be off set on the base sheet with all edge laps 100mm wide and end laps 150mm wide. Check all laps on completion and leave as a neat and tidy finish.
Install bituFLAME® Plura AD 2.5mm thick self-adhered base sheet to the primed polystyrene substrate. All end laps 150mm and side laps 100mm pressure rolled closed.
Install bituFLAME® 3mm sand as a finished cap sheet, fully torched applied directly onto the bituFLAME® Plura AD base sheet, all sheet joints off set and centered over the base sheet forming the finished 2 layer system. All end laps must also be off set on the base sheet with all edge laps 100mm wide and end laps 150mm wide. The heat from the cap sheet application will thermally activate additional adhesion and weld base sheet laps. Check all laps on completion and leave as a neat and tidy finish.
Install bituFLAME® Viaduct 5mm membrane sand finished as a single layer, fully torched applied to the substrate with 100mm edge laps and 150mm end laps. Check all laps are fully bonded and the installation is neat and tidy.
Seal and waterproof pipe penetrations to Waterproofing Systems NZ Ltd requirements. Provide WPS MS 40 sealant over backing rods to the internal and external face of the wall and pipe junction, apply SBR bitumen liquid tanking as bedding for the Gripset Elastoproof collar. Apply the Gripset Elastoproof collar over with an over coating of liquid SBR bitumen to the collar, finish with WPS MS 40 sealant to the collar pipe junction. As part of the bituFLAME® application flash over the Gripset components and secure with a stainless steel metal ring clamp to the pipe.
All side lap joints to be 100mm wide and end laps 150mm wide. All laps to be fully welded and seamed off. In a two-layer system all laps to be off-set. Ensure adequate heat control to ensure full lap integrity.
Ensure lap areas are kept free of foreign matter that could interfere with lap integrity.
For foundations projecting a toe out, generally extending 150mm or more from the struck wall, install a bituFLAME extruded bitumen fillet at the internal junction. For a bituFLAME single layer system flash over with a 200mm wide sand-finished bituFLAME flashing. For a bituFLAME two layer systems, apply the base and cap sheets directly over the bitumen fillet.
In a full tanking envelope, protrude the under slab membrane 150mm beyond the perimeter of the footing. When wall is struck, bring this portion of membrane up and torch to wall base. Install the wall membrane down over the top to form a sound seal. Ensure the 150mm flap is adequately protected from damage during construction of the walls and that foreign matter is not able to contaminate the critical lap area.
For flush foundation to wall construction joints install 3mm thick x 200mm wide sand-finished bituFLAME® flashing to junction of foundation and wall. before the primary bituFLAME single layer tanking membrane system is installed. Where it is a full envelope 2 layer system the flashing is not required.
Where bituFLAME® is torch applied to a concrete blinding slab place a polythene separation layer as protection and slip sheet over the exposed bituFLAME® prior to access by following trades, floor slab steel work and slab pour. Where temporary access is required by vehicles and other construction machinery install plywood sheets as protection until no further requirement, recheck the membrane for mechanical damage.
Fully protect bituFLAME® prior to backfilling against the walls. Neatly fit 3.3mm thick Corflute overlapping 50mm and taping closed with 80mm bituBOND® tape. Fold at all internal and external corners to ensure full protection on corner returns and tape close.
Fully protect bituFLAME® prior to backfilling against the walls. Install Styrobeck Form Flow polystyrene edge butted and taped closed with each with 80mm bituBOND® tape.
Fully protect bituFLAME® prior to backfilling against the walls. Install Expol Styrodrain polystyrene sheets edge butted and taped closed with each with 80mm bituBOND® tape.
Place the back fill once the vertical membrane is in place and adequately protected. Ensure the drain coil system at the base of the tanking is installed, the specified protection system is installed correctly. Use soil or aggregate with 30% fines and compact in layers to a minimum of 95% proctor. In tight void situations back fill with sand compact with hand and wet down. Ensure back fill is free from sharp objects.
Back fill up to the pipe penetrations, then fully encase the pipe penetration in sand before continuing with the back fill process. Ensure penetration pipes are not disturbed or bent from compaction.
As sections of the tanking are completed, arrange for inspection of the work before covering with protective sheets, walls, or slabs. Complete the applicator's substrate readiness check sheets and installation Quality Control Sheets, and provide to them for issuing the Materials Warranty.
Use a light bristled broom to clean up all rubbish, dust and contaminants as the work proceeds leaving clean on completion.
Leave this work in a sound condition, free of any defect.
Remove debris, unused materials and elements from the site.
