It is important to ensure that all personnel on site have access to accurate, up to date technical information on the many products, materials and equipment used on a project.  In most cases individual products are not used in isolation, but form part of a building process.  Also a particular manufacturer's and/or supplier's requirements for handling, storage, preparation, installation, finishing and protection of their product can vary from what might be considered the norm.  Access to technical information can help overcome this potential problem.

Ensure WPS Substrate Readiness Check Sheet has been completed and WPS Quality Control Check Sheets are on site and completed.

3.5
ACCEPTANCE OF SUBSTRATE

Confirm that the substrate complies with the NZBC E2/AS1 for the relevant substrates and Waterproofing Systems NZ Ltd documents, including fillets, sumps, outlets and projections, and ensure work of the required standard.  Ensure the fall complies with E2/AS1 including correct fall to rainwater outlets to avoid ponding,

  • Lay roofs to a minimum fall of 1:30 (2°) to NZBC E2/AS1, 8.5.1 a.
  • Lay decks to a minimum of 1:40 (1.5°) to NZBC E2/AS1, 8.5.1 b.

Plywood substrates are best fixed with stainless steel, self-tapping, counter-sunk screws and tight butted.  Specify in 4337 PLYWOOD ROOFING AND DECKING, along with a requirement to bring the substrate up to an acceptable standard for this clause.  Do not use hardboard or MDF board.  Chamfer 30mm back from the outer edges of plywood sheets that run into gutters or rainwater heads to prevent the roof edge-to-gutter junction forming a lip and the free run of water into the gutters.  T&G plywood is not recommended if sheet edges are not supported with timber nogs.

3.9
LAMINEX STRANDSARKING SUBSTRATE

Refer to 4338LS LAMINEX NEW ZEALAND STRANDSARKING ROOFING SUBSTRATE for specification requirements and details.

Before applying membrane carry out preparatory work as follows:

  • On old pour-on bitumen systems with large cracks and volcanoes identified, repair them using bitu-screed mortar.
  • On existing aluminium coated asphalt and modified bitumen membranes water blast the surface to remove loosely bonded parts of the mineral chip finishes, and remove loose chips with a leaf blower.  Refix any loose membrane with mechanical fixing at 300mm centres as required.

Modify above clause to suit.  Contact Waterproofing Systems NZ Ltd to confirm suitability of existing membrane roof and to confirm any additional preparation work required.

Ensure bituBOND® adhesive primer used for smooth surfaces including along drip edge trim, and around rainwater outlet flanges, as required.

3.19
LAYING AND JOINTING

Lay membrane using a gas blow torch applied heat bonding, allowing 100mm for all edge laps and 150mm for all end laps.  Where a torch-on gas flame heat cannot be applied use cold applied bituBOND® with a hot air gun for the application of heat to make the bond.  Lay in order from sumps, through gutters, valleys, eaves, verges, main roof and upstands to cover flashings.

3.20
HEAT CONTROL

Control heat to ensure the membrane is fully bonded during installation  to the substrate with all laps properly formed.  Ensure full bonding between the bituFLAME® base sheet and bituFLAME® cap sheet.  Do not over heat membrane.

Over heating membrane may damage the polyester reinforcement.

3.21

Suitable as a re-roof cap sheet for direct overlay of existing bitumen membranes, including mineral chip finishes, pour-on bitumen and asphalt finishes.

3.25
INTERNAL GUTTERS

Lay membrane in box gutters longitudinally with the membrane neatly dressed into the internal corners and through the base of the gutter.  Ensure ring clamp droppers, stainless steel scuppers or overflow sumps are all fitted recessed into the substrate flush with the finished surface.  Scuppers must be finished with a drip edge for the water discharge.

3.26
EXTERNAL GUTTERS

Pre-prime the drip edge angle with bituBOND® adhesive at the time of general priming.  Install the bituFLAME® base sheet dressing down the external edge forming good adhesion then dress down onto the drip edge angle with slightly less heat to prevent burning off the primer.  Firmly block on the top external corner and front vertical face of the down turn.  Repeat the same action when installing the bituFLAME® cap sheet and trim off flush with the bottom of the drip edge. This requires to be completed prior to external gutter installation.
