QUALIFICATIONS - WATERPROOFING

Liquid waterproofing work to be carried out by experienced and fully qualified applicators approved by Waterproofing Systems NZ Ltd to install the Gripset® 2P & Gripset® 38FC membrane system who hold a current Licensed Building Practitioner's licence for external membrane applications.

The applicator must complete the Quality Control Checksheets as the job progresses for presentation with the warranty application.

Substitutions are not permitted to any specified Gripset® Waterproofing System or associated components and products.

Accept responsibility for the watertight performance of the completed membrane system including all penetrations.

PRE-INSTALLATION MEETING

Main contractor to convene a meeting between the applicator and all associated consultants.  Ensure all parties have reviewed the plans and detailed drawings, specification and fully understand and know what is required for effective performance of the system.

SPECIAL DETAILS

Where a standard WPS detail does not exist, or if a standard detail cannot be applied, an approved alternative must be obtained from Waterproofing Systems NZ Ltd before proceeding with the installation and submitted to the contract administrator for approval.

FLOOD TEST

Dam up at the rainwater droppers, wet area water outlets to a depth of 40mm and flood test for 8 hours.  Make good any lack of water tightness when the surface is completely dry.  Flood testing can only be done 48 hours after the installation of the membrane.

QUALITY ASSURANCE

Maintain quality necessary to assure that work is performed in accordance with this specification, the Waterproofing Systems Gripset SBR Liquid Waterproofing Product Manual recommendations, plans and detailed drawings for the project.

 

Ensure that the applicator's QC Checksheets are completed fully and faithfully for each installation area.

WPS C Screed, a polymer enhanced water-resistant high bonding screed.  Screeds can be formed from 2mm to 80mm.  Supplied in 20kg bags.

FEATHER FINISH SCREEDING COMPOUND

Gripset® DM premium grade mortar producing a fine feather finish to zero which can be used with the WPS C Screed to create a zero finish to outlets.  Supplied in 20kg bags.

Gripset® GP Primer, a water based fast drying single part primer and bonding agent for adhesion to porous surfaces.  Coverage 6-8m² per litre, supplied in 15 litre pails.

Gripset® OP primer, a single part smooth surface primer used for priming Sycon Secura boards, aluminium, plastic, stainless steel and RAB board finishes.  Supplied in 5 and 15 litre pails.

Gripset® P10 a single part penetrating primer and vapour barrier against rising damp and active moisture. Supplied in 10 litre cans.

Gripset® E60, a two-component water-based epoxy system suitable for use as both primer and prevention of moisture penetration and rising damp.  Gripset® E60 provides both positive and negative hydrostatic pressure resistance.  Supplied in 10 and 20 litre kits (2-part system) with an approximate coverage of 3m² per litre.

Gripset® 2P, a two-part water based flexible waterproofing SBR membrane system comprising of Gripset® 2P liquid component plus 2P dry powder.  Quick curing in cooler conditions.  Complies with AS/NZS 4858, as a Class II membrane.  Supplied in 15 kg bags and 2P liquid in 10 litre pails.

Gripset® rubberised bond breaker prefabricated 90º internal corners, size 200mm x 200mm x 120mm.  Provides an elastic rupture resistant seal at internal corner junctions.  Performs as part of the bond breaker in the application of Gripset® 38 and Gripset® 2P.

Self-adhesive butyl rubber-based reinforcement tape with an external fleece finish used over non-porous surfaces, used for substrate joints, abutments, junctions, before the application of Gripset® 2P and 38FC membranes.  Supplied in 80mm wide x 10m long rolls.

Comply with the requirements and instructions of Waterproofing Systems Gripset Product manual, detailed drawings, data sheets, method statements and specifications.

 

If damaged or not satisfactory, do not commence work until the affected area is rectified.  Commencement of installation constitutes acceptance of site conditions.

STANDARDS AND TOLERANCES

Refer to the general section 1270 CONSTRUCTION for general requirements.

Amend this clause to describe specific standards and tolerances to be achieved in carrying out this part of the work.  Although such tolerances are typically included in standards (NZS, AS/NZS etc) in certain circumstances it is worth restating these in this clause.

Application - preparation

PREPARATION OF BACKGROUNDS

Prepare backgrounds to AS 3958.1, 4 and in accordance with Waterproofing Systems Gripset Product manual installation, and the product manufacturers instructions for the selected substrate.

3.7
SUBSTRATE CONDITION

Ensure that the substrate is in a suitable condition to allow work of the required standard and will comply to NZBC E2/AS1 for the relevant substrate and Waterproofing Systems NZ Ltd Gripset Product manual requirements.

 

Ensure that the substrate construction is well braced against movement and deflection and structurally sound.  Ensure that the substrate falls to the rainwater/water outlets and water must not pond.  Ensure all surfaces are clean, dry and free from dust and dirt, oils or grease with no projections of sharp materials.

 

Acid etch and/or diamond grind concrete surfaces as required to achieve a suitable surface.

3.8
SUBSTRATE PREPARATION

Remove projections and all debris, leaving the surface dust-free, laitance free, oil-free and clean, with nothing that could diminish the adhesion of primers.  Grind off steps or sharp protrusions caused by formwork joints.  Ensure that the substrates are sound and dry, and there are no concrete additives or release agents that could affect the adhesion of membrane.

Vacuum when preparation is complete to remove all dust.

CONTAMINATED SUBSTRATES - CONCRETE

Generally concrete surfaces are prepared via mechanical abrasion such as scabbling, grinding or shot blasting to a clean, sound surface.  The surface requires preparation to expose the aggregate to enable a good mechanical key for subsequent applications.

SUBSTRATE PREPARATION - FLOOR

Refer to 6192 FLOORING SUBSTRATE PREPARATION for preparation and repair of floor substrates.

SUBSTRATE - FIBRE CEMENT

Ensure fibre cement sheeting is wet area grade and is suitable for installing the membrane (refer to Sheet manufacturers details for correct fixing, thicknesses and sheet layout).  Minimum Type B, Category 3.With primed/sealed face and edges.

 

Requirements if used for:

Flooring:

Minimum thickness 18mm with joists at minimum 400mm centres and blocking at 1200 centres. Fixing, glue and stainless steel screws.

Wall linings:

Minimum thickness 9mm with framing at minimum 600mm centres.

Floor Overlay:

Minimum thickness 6mm

The above requirements are to NZBC E3/AS2.  Co-ordinate with relevant fibre-cement, lining, flooring or floor prep section or refer to 6192 FLOORING SUBSTRATE PREPARATION for fibre cement underlay sheets.

Modify clause to suit.

PRIME SUBSTRATE

Prime the substrate with the selected primer in accordance with the manufacturer's requirements.  Allow primers to fully dry in accordance with relevant Gripset® product installation requirements.

  • for dry porous substrate use Gripset® GP primer
  • for light moisture substrates use Gripset® P10
  • for damp substrates use Gripset® E60
  • for metal and smooth surfaces use Gripset® OP primer
  • for old existing or remediation use Gripset® 11Y slurry primer

SCREEDS

Install WPS C Screed and/or Gripset® DM screed in accordance with manufacturer's installation requirements.  Form screeds with a deviation from plane of not more than 5mm over 3 metres.

Form screeds in areas where water is used in significant amounts with a deviation from plane of not more than 5mm over 3 metres.  Unless otherwise specified form screeds with the following minimum fall gradients to BRANZ Good Practice Guide: Tiling, 6.5 Falls in floors.

If using NZBC E3/AS2 for waterproofing, add to list of acceptable solutions.

FILM THICKNESS

Ensure that the dry film thickness specified in the Waterproofing Systems NZ Ltd Gripset Product manual and specifications is achieved, including additional requirements of the bond breaking detailing.

WEATHER CONDITIONS

Apply Gripset® 2P or 38FC liquid membrane only in fair weather with surface temperatures above 6°C and below 25°C.

RAINWATER AND FLOOR WASTE FITTINGS

Co-ordinate and install to suppliers and Waterproofing Systems NZ Ltd requirements.

 

Where required, install the selected dropper or scupper outlets and overflows at the lowest point of the deck, or internal floor waste, recessed into the substrate just below flush with the substrate surface.  Prime with Gripset® OP primer before the Gripset® 2P or 38FC application commences.

MIX GRIPSET® 2P MEMBRANE

Mix Gripset® 2P in accordance with manufacturers instructions.  Slowly pour Gripset® 2P dry powder into the liquid while mixing with a slow speed electric stirrer.  Mix thoroughly ensuring the solids content is evenly dispersed throughout.

STIR GRIPSET® 38FC MEMBRANE

Pour approximately 50% of the Gripset® 38FC into a clean pail and stir before application to ensure the solids content is evenly dispersed through the liquid.

APPLY DETAILING ACCESSORIES

Install Elastoproof rubberised pre-made corners, pipe penetration collars and tapes using the Gripset® 2P ensuring the fleece sections are saturated and bonded to the substrate.

APPLY GRIPSET® 2P OR 38FC MEMBRANE

Apply a minimum of 2 coats Gripset® 2P or 38FC, with a total minimum coverage of 1.5 litres/m2 wet film thickness, forming an approximate dry film thickness of 1.2mm/m2.
Calculate accurately the amount of Gripset liquid membrane required for the area to be waterproofed to ensure the correct dry film thickness is reached.

 

Allow extra Gripset liquid membrane to install the Elastoproof® bond breaker tapes and corners to ensure the general membrane film thickness is not compromised.

GRIPSET 11Y SLURRY PROTECTION COATING

Where tileJAK® pedestal system is to be installed over the Gripset® 2P system, apply 2 coats of the Gripset® 11Y slurry in accordance with manufacturers installation instructions, as protection against scuffing and mechanical damage and regular maintenance/cleaning.

EXPOSED GRIPSET MEMBRANE

Where Gripset® 2P is not covered with trafficable finishes, prime the Gripset® 2P with Gripset® GP primer and apply 2 coats of Gripset® P39 as the UV and protection coating.  Where Gripset® 2P will be directly exposed to traffic, fully sand blind the Gripset® P39 for hard wearing protection.

POTABLE WATER TANKS

Apply Gripset® 2P to a DFT of 1.6mm in potable water applications followed by 2 coats of Gripset® 11Y slurry for membrane protection during cleaning.  Allow the new membrane to cure for a minimum of 14 days before filling the tank.

SEALANT

Use WPS MS40 sealant adhesive with Gripset® 2P or 38FC SBR systems.  Ensure the membrane is clean and free from contaminants before applying the WPS MS40 sealant.

DRYING TIME / PROTECTION

Do not leave membrane exposed for prolonged periods to UV light and the possibility of mechanical damage.  Protect the completed membrane system from mechanical damage until tiling begins.  Apply the tiling/overlay once the Gripset® 2P or 38FC membrane is dried and fully cured.  Drying times are variable depending on local climatic conditions, in cold damp conditions allow for longer drying time.

COMPLETION - TESTS & CERTIFICATION

Refer to 1270 CONSTRUCTION for general test and certification requirements at completion.

Expand this clause to detail specific requirements for tests and certification required on completion of this section of work.  For example acoustic tests, thermal testing, leak testing etc.  Nominate the person that test results and / or certification is to be submitted to.  Co-ordinate with the INSPECTIONS clause if required to link testing with a Hold Point or Notification Point.  Delete this clause if there are no testing / certification requirements.

Ensure INSPECTIONS clause is included to complement this clause.

ACCEPTANCE - WATERPROOFING
  • Arrange for an inspection of the completed waterproof membrane work.
  • Substrate Readiness Checksheets have been completed.
  • Supply completed QC Checksheets with the warranty application.
  • Protect the membrane until completion of the contract works.
