HERMPAC TIMBER DECKING SYSTEM
1
GENERAL

If you have pre-customised this work section using the "questions and answers" provided as part of the downloading process, it may be necessary to amend some clauses to suit the final project-specific version.

The section must still be checked and customised to suit the project being specified, by removing any other irrelevant details and adding project-specific details and selections.

This section relates to the supply and installation of Hermpac Hardwood Decking:

Modify or extend the above description to suit the project being specified.

The Hermpac watershed profile has a slight curvature to help counteract cupping and minimize water ponding on the surface of the decking.  The profile also decreases the risk of personal injury as a result of slips or falls.

It is important to ensure that all personnel on site have access to accurate, up to date technical information on the products, materials, accessories  and other equipment used on a project.  In most cases individual products are not used in isolation, but form part of a building process.  Also a particular manufacturer's and/or supplier's requirements for handling, storage, preparation, installation, finishing and protection of their product can vary from what might be considered the norm.  Access to technical information can help overcome this potential problem.

Requirements
1.5
QUALIFICATIONS

Installers to be experienced, competent trades people familiar with the materials and techniques specified.

1.6
NO SUBSTITUTIONS

Substitutions are not permitted to any of the Hermpac Limited specified systems, components and associated products listed in this section.

1.7
TIMBER - NATURAL DURABILITY

Natural durability of timber to AS 5604.

The heartwood of an individual piece of timber may vary from the species nominated classification.

1.8
HEALTH AND SAFETY

Cutting and drilling of Hermpac decking boards must be carried out in well ventilated areas and dust masks, eye and hearing protection must be worn.

1.9
MAINTENANCE

Building owners are responsible for the maintenance of the Hermpac Decking System. Annual inspections must be made to all aspects of the decking, including substrate.

Any damaged areas or areas showing signs of deterioration which would allow degradation of the timber must be repaired immediately. Sealant and oil coatings must be maintained in accordance with the relevant manufacturer's instructions.

To maximize the life and appearance of the decking, regular cleaning (at least annually) of the deck surface is recommended. To remove grime, dirt and organic growth, use warm water and mild detergent or other timber/deck cleaning products. Hardwood decking can be pressure washed but care must be taken.  Use a soft jet pressure wash to avoid any damage to timber fibers by going too hard and/or too close.

Once clean and dry reapplication of a clear penetrating oil to the deck surface is recommended.

Hermpac recommends the use of Wood-X "Clear Base" Oil and does not recommend the use of tinted oils or stains.

1.10

Performance - slip resistance

This guidance note describes the use of Masterspec slip resistance clauses.  The extent of slip resistance clauses included within this section is subject to Q&A and section requirements.  Ensure the section 1278SR SCHEDULE OF SLIP RESISTANCE TESTING is included in the specification

NZBC D1/AS1, Table 2 identifies walking surfaces that are level or sloping access routes (including stairs) under dry and wet conditions that either:

  • Have acceptable slip resistance to D1/AS1, Table 2 without testing.  Use the clause SLIP RESISTANCE - SURFACES EXEMPT FROM TESTING.
  • Require testing to prove slip resistance.  Use the clauses SLIP RESISTANCE - PREVIOUSLY TESTED SURFACE or TEST - SLIP RESISTANCE as appropriate.
  • Are not acceptable to, or outside the scope of D1/AS1 Table 2.  Surfaces in this category may be evaluated as an alternative solution based on testing (and may require alternative testing).  Use the clauses SLIP RESISTANCE - PREVIOUSLY TESTED SURFACE or TEST - SLIP RESISTANCE as appropriate.

Note:

  • If the surface is already tested, use clause SLIP RESISTANCE - PREVIOUSLY TESTED SURFACE.
  • If the surface is not tested (& testing is required) use clause TEST - SLIP RESISTANCE

Exceptions to wet slip resistance requirements for level access routes (refer NZBC D1/AS1, 2.1.2) include:

  • Situations where safety matting is provided.
  • For housing wet slip resistance applies only to the access route on the approach to the main entrance and not inside that entrance and not on the approach to other entrances.
1.11
SLIP RESISTANCE - SURFACES EXEMPT FROM TESTING

Walking surfaces comply with NZBC D1/AS1, Table 2 for slip resistance requirements and are exempt from testing.

Check project walking surfaces against Table 2 to confirm acceptable solution relates to project requirements.  Identify compliant walking surfaces if this section also includes surfaces to be tested, or surfaces previously tested.

1.12
SLIP RESISTANCE - PREVIOUSLY TESTED SURFACE

The following walking surfaces have previously been tested to AS 4586-2013, Appendix A, Wet Pendulum Testing for slip resistance and comply with NZBC D1/AS1 requirements.

Kwila:

Bandsawn, Dressed, & Sawn

EXECUTION
Conditions
3.1
DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING

Stack Hermpac Decking flat and true, clear of the ground by a minimum of 150mm and supported on dry and clean timber gluts at maximum 900mm centers.

The timber must be kept dry either by storing within an enclosed building or when stored externally an additional secondary cover to the plastic wrapping is required. Care must be taken to avoid damage to edges, ends and the decking surfaces. Water must not be allowed to enter the stack.

3.2
PRE-INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS

Check work previously carried out and confirm it is of the required standard for this part of the work.

All substrate timber treatment to NZS 3602 section 107, Requirements for wood-based building components exposed to exterior weather conditions and dampness, to achieve a 50-year durability and table 1B.

3.3
GENERALLY

Execution to include those methods, practices and processes contained in the current syllabus for the National Certificate in Carpentry and the National Certificate in Joinery (cabinetry, exterior joinery, and stairs).

Check site dimensions. Drill and cut holes and recesses and form joints to the componentry manufacturer's recommendations. Work to be accurate, square and true to line and face.

Application
3.4
PREPARATION, PRE-COATING

Hermpac Decking must be kept dry prior to installation.

Ensure all faces and edges of the Hermpac Hardwood Decking are envelope sealed with an exterior grade penetrating oil, prior to installation. Hermpac recommends Wood-X Hardwood Decking Oil.

As timber decking is cut and before laying/installing, ensure all cut ends and exposed end grains are coated in an exterior grade penetrating oil. Hermpac recommends Wood-X Hardwood Decking Oil.

Application of a quality hardwood decking oil will assist to stabilise boards, minimise surface checking and splitting, and  slow moisture transference in and out of the boards as the decking  acclimitises into it’s environment.

All hardwood decking (whether left uncoated or coated with a clear oil) will change to its weathered colour/silver off over time. Weathering time depends on the amount of direct exposure to UV and other environmental factors.

3.5
INSTALL DECKING JOIST TAPE - ACCOYA®/ACCOYA GREY®

Install Decking Joist Tape to top of framing prior to installing Accoya®/Accoya Grey® decking.

Accoya®/Accoya Grey® will permanently soak up CCA from framing when the timber is wet.  In all cases there should be an impermeable moisture barrier installed between decking and the frame.  Not required for other timber species.

3.6
LAYING TIMBER SPACED BOARDING

Install Hermpac Hardwood Decking starting at the corner of the deck section being covered. The first board must be installed plumb to assist with the installation of subsequent boards.

Refer BRANZ Build Supplement 139 – Timber Decks

3.7
HOLE TEMPLATE

The Hermpac Hole Template allows for 15mm from-edge screw holes and a 12.5mm screw and nail pilot hole for narrow decking. The length of the template's leg is a guide for fixing position from a cut end.

3.8
DECK SPACING

Ensure board spacing allows for the climatic region, timber species and its movement characteristics, dryness at the time of laying, width and thickness of decking, overlay over a waterproof membrane and proximity to ground.

Board spacing for hardwood  decking is very important.  The New Zealand climate varies considerably depending on regions and seasons, and these factors must be taken into account.  Other factors that must be considered are timber species and its movement characteristics, dryness of the timber at the time of laying, width and thickness  of the board, and distance from ground or waterproof membrane under the boards.  As a guide, the wider the board - the more movement can be expected.

Refer https://www.hermpac.co.nz/media/6238/decking_species_guide_a3.pdf

3.9
FIXINGS - WATERSHED

Using the Hermpac hole template, mark hole center 15mm from edge of board for wide board decking (140mm x 21mm) and 12.5mm from edge of board for narrow board decking (90mm x 21mm and 65mm x 21mm).

For 230mm x 30mm or 40mm decking use three 65mm x 12-gauge screws, placed centrally and 15mm in from each edge.

Refer to the Hermpac Deck Fixing Guide. https://www.hermpac.co.nz/media/6237/deck_fixing_guide.pdf

When using the Hermpac countersunk decking screws, fixings must be predrilled using the Hermpac 10- or 12-gauge deck drill and countersinking bit. This bit can be adjusted to drill through the decking board only and will give the correct depth for the Hermpac 65mm x 12-gauge stainless decking screw head.

Using a power-driven screwdriver, drive screws into the deck surface to the correct depth. Take care not to overdrive the screw as this may result in the screw heads being damaged.

Narrow board deck profiles can be nailed but screw fixing is recommended for all decking profiles. Refer Hermpac Deck Fixing Guide for fixing details.

For 65mm x 21mm decking it is possible to use one 65mm x 12 gauge screw fixed centrally in the board.

Hermpac does not recommend the use of wide board decking (115mm and wider)  over a waterproof membrane or where the decking will be within 300mm of ground level.  When decking is being used over a waterproof membrane ensure that the membrane is compatible with the hardwood decking oil.

NOTE: Screw fix where slats are required to be removed when necessary for maintenance to membrane below for an enclosed deck.

3.10
FIXINGS - PROMENADE / BOARDWALK / CUSTOM PROFILE

Using a power-driven screwdriver, drive screws into the deck surface to the correct depth. Take care not to overdrive the screw as this may result in the screw heads being damaged. Fix in accordance with Hermpac Deck Fixings Guide. https://www.hermpac.co.nz/media/6237/deck_fixing_guide.pdf

Refer to Hermpac for specific fixing options to suit project.
