We recently introduced the new eCert tool to the Masterspec platform. With eCert, specifiers can compare environmental documents from building product suppliers, making informed decisions that align with project specific environmental goals. The selected environmental documents can then be attached to your specification appendix.
eCert currently supports accredited documentation for the following:
- Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs)
- Declare
- Toitū Envirocare
- Eco Choice Aotearoa
- Global Green Tag
- Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)
- Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC)
Our editor team has updated all Masterspec work sections which have references to environmental documents.
Where environmental document references have been manually added to work sections in the past, these have been removed. When adding environmental documents to your specification using the eCert tool, document referencing and scheduling clauses are automatically added under a new clause named MANUFACTURER/SUPPLIER ENVIRONMENTAL DOCUMENTS. This streamlines the specification process and ensures document references are up to date.
References to environmental documents not currently supported by eCert have also been removed from work sections, however these documents are still available in mDocs for inclusion and reference in your specification. These documents and any environmental document sourced directly from building product suppliers can be attached to your specification using the eCert manual upload function.

Specification of Certified Sustainable Timber
Alongside the eCert tool, we have made changes to improve and simplify how certified sustainable timber is specified. This has involved updating all work sections with reference to Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) and Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) certified sustainable timber.
Individual work sections handle the specifics of FSC and PEFC timber certification in SELECTIONS. If there is a project specific requirement for the contractor to demonstrate chain of custody (CoC) through obtaining and tracking all FSC and PEFC certified timber delivery notes, invoices and receipts, then one of Masterspec's branded or generic 1226 Sustainable Project work sections can be included in your specification to detail the requirements.
