NECO₂ is Live: A New Era for Embodied Carbon Transparency in Building Materials
New Zealand’s construction sector has taken a major step providing New Zealand-centric embodied carbon data with the launch of the first release of NECO₂ – the National Embodied Carbon Repository, now live at neco2.co.nz.
Developed by CIL Masterspec in partnership with BRANZ, NECO₂ is the only project for a national carbon repository endorsed by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) and is supported by the New Zealand Government. It replaces any previous static spreadsheets with a maintained, regularly updated dataset. It includes major updates from earlier BRANZ data, with thousands more entries and refined assessment methods. It is a free, open-data platform providing verified embodied carbon data for building materials and products.
Importantly, NECO₂ is New Zealand-centric. While many Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) available globally are based on European or North American contexts, NECO₂ provides data specific to products both imported from offshore and those manufactured in New Zealand, supply chains, and local construction practices. By submitting their EPDs and LCA data, product suppliers and manufacturers can help grow and enrich the repository, ensuring it reflects the latest innovations and materials in use across New Zealand.
This is the first release of NECO₂, and lays the foundation for a national resource that will evolve over time, and we are seeking feedback for that continuous improvement. The next planned releases include direct access to the data for third-party tools, making embodied carbon data more accessible and actionable across the sector.
“The launch of the National Embodied Carbon Data Repository is a major milestone for climate-resilient construction in New Zealand, providing a single source of data to support consumers to make informed decisions. It’s fantastic to see this initiative being led by industry - showing the power of collaboration and innovation in driving meaningful change. I’m proud to see Kiwi businesses and experts leading the way towards a sustainable future for our built environment.”
- Hon Chris Penk, Minister for Building and Construction
