Project Overview

Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre stands as a landmark civic and cultural facility in the heart of Christchurch, New Zealand. Designed by Woods Bagot in association with Warren and Mahoney, the centre is a dynamic expression of place, culture, and community. With its fluid architectural form inspired by braided rivers and its integration of Ngāi Tahu cultural narratives, Te Pae is both a world-class convention venue and a symbol of Christchurch’s regeneration.

Design & Construction Complexity

Delivered under a Design & Construct (D&C) model, the project demanded a high level of coordination across disciplines. The scale and complexity of Te Pae—spanning fire engineering, acoustic performance, and seismic resilience—required a specification platform that could evolve with the project’s needs.

Masterspec’s Role

Masterspec was instrumental in enabling the design team to manage the intricacies of this multifaceted build. Its structured framework and adaptability supported the project through every phase—from concept to completion.

Specification Highlights

  • Agile Documentation: Masterspec’s modular structure allowed for real-time updates and seamless integration of evolving design requirements.
  • Collaborative Clarity: Enabled consistent communication across a large, multidisciplinary team.
  • Regulatory Alignment: The updates feature ensured specifications remained compliant with changing codes and manufacturer data.
  • Design Integrity: Supported the architectural vision while meeting stringent performance criteria.

Outcome

Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre is now a celebrated venue for international and local events, embodying excellence in design, engineering, and cultural storytelling. Masterspec’s contribution helped ensure the project met its ambitious goals with precision and clarity.

Message from Project Leader

"Masterspec played a critical role in the successful delivery of the Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre. Given the scale, complexity, and fluid nature of this D&C project—especially with competing requirements across fire, acoustics, and seismic design—having a specification platform that could adapt seamlessly was essential. Masterspec’s structured framework and agility made it easy to manage ongoing changes and maintain clarity across a large project team. The updates feature was particularly valuable over the project’s long duration, helping us stay current with manufacturer revisions and regulatory developments. Overall, Masterspec provided the robustness and flexibility needed to support both design quality and effective delivery."

- Eric Buhrs  Associate Principal, Woods Bagot
