Masterspec Specified: Port Tarakohe by JTB Architects

21 May 2026

A compact 140 m² coastal facility designed with a strong emphasis on low‑carbon materials, environmental responsiveness, and long‑term resilience. Set against Golden Bay’s limestone bluffs, the building balances environmental care, resilience, and operational efficiency in a challenging marine environment.

The building’s north‑facing orientation maximises natural light and reduces operational energy demand, while the roof structure is configured to support future solar panel installation, enabling on‑site renewable generation. Service.

Cultural elements developed with Manawhenua Ki Mohua—such as etched honu and Anaweka Waka motifs, kōwhaiwhai patterns, and pā‑inspired screening—are integrated into the façade without compromising durability or maintenance requirements. The result is a high‑performance, environmentally responsive piece of coastal infrastructure that balances resilience, cultural expression, and lifecycle efficiency.

Project details

Principal and Auckland Director, Marc Barron shared his thoughts on working with the Masterspec platform and its contribution to the JTB Architects’ projects.

"JTB Architects operate across many project scales – from small residential properties through to $100m commercial developments. We have used Masterspec for over 25 years for all of our projects and appreciate the specification product range running from Minor, Basic to Standard, allowing us to match the appropriate level of project complexity.

The range of product selections and supporting documentation, together with regular updates, allow our team accurate, informed and current information that supports the quality and accuracy of our documentation. The use of the MasterKey link between Masterspec and our drawing files allows regular updates that streamlines our workflow as the design progresses and ensures accurate and coordinated project documents."
