MASTERSPEC FAREWELLS MANAGING EDITOR ALEX SHAW

23 Nov 2021

It is with some regret that we must announce that Masterspec Managing Editor Alex Shaw, having now completed a six-month handover period, has retired. Alex has become very well known to many of our customers over his fourteen-year stint as chief ‘technical boffin’, displaying an almost encyclopaedic knowledge of the complexities of our Building Code, Standards and specification practice.

Alex has been a true champion of the value of a construction specification and its pivotal role in the end-to-end construction process. He worked closely both with MBIE and local council Consent teams questioning, clarifying and explaining points of detail on behalf of our subscribers. His ability to recall and reference Building Code details and data was astonishing, matched only by his enthusiasm for ensuring this information was shared as widely as possible. Over the years Alex has written hundreds of technical articles guiding and informing our industry with enthusiasm and frequently presented at tertiary institutions around the country.

Given the continuing growth of Masterspec and the development already in the pipeline we have decided to adjust the role and have appointed Masterspec senior writer Chris Myers as our new Managing Editor to focus on the production aspects of the editorial writing team and recently appointed Mike Jackson as the General Manager - Construction Specifications to manage the wider requirements of the specifications. Mike is a registered Architect and has more than 30 years’ experience in the design, documentation and delivery of a broad range of predominantly large scale, complex projects in New Zealand and Australia.

Alex only recently completed a years-long renovation of his family home and, like many before him, immediately sold and purchased a wonderful large section overlooking the sea to design and build his next dream project. We look forward to seeing the results, and take pity on the tradesperson who fails to follow the specification or achieve Alex’s exacting standards.

Finally, on behalf of the entire team at Masterspec, I would like to thank you Alex for your contribution, your loyalty, your dedication and your commitment to the success of our support for the New Zealand Construction industry.

Happy building!
