CIL is Now Accepting Product Carbon Data for the National Embodied Carbon Data Repository for Construction.

03 Mar 2025

CIL Masterspec is now accepting carbon information in the form of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) or Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) from manufacturers and importers of New Zealand construction products for inclusion in the National Embodied Carbon Data Repository.

This carbon data repository will replace and expand the BRANZ published carbon dataset (CO2NSTRUCT) and BRANZ are now redirecting all updates to CIL/Masterspec.

For background, BRANZ and CIL announced their carbon data collaboration last year. BRANZ would be the Steward of the dataset, ensuring an authoritative science-based approach to building a localised carbon dataset. CIL would be the Custodian, to build and operate a repository as free open data. CIL would also keep the data up to date using its internal team of qualified architects and designers to make assessments for updates. CIL is industry owned by the New Zealand Institute of Architects and Master Builders. Once live, the organisations from the wider construction industry will be invited to assist with stewardship and continuous improvement of the dataset.

The collaboration was announced by the Building and Construction Minister, Hon. Chris Penk, and officially endorsed by MBIE. MBIE, BRANZ and CIL are overseeing the project to transfer the dataset from BRANZ to CIL’s systems.

Since then, BRANZ has undertaken a significant review and update of the carbon dataset and put processes in place to future-proof the quality and robustness of the data.

That updated dataset is now transferred to CIL and all further updates are being actioned by the CIL team. This new dataset will be publicly available towards the middle of the year and the BRANZ updates, along with the new data received over the next months will be published then. This will supersede any current copies of the older BRANZ CO2NSTRUCT dataset in circulation and will be the only BRANZ-endorsed data set for New Zealand.

To make submissions simple, we have created a website for New Zealand suppliers and manufacturers of construction products to submit their products' embodied carbon data for inclusion in our national database. Simply visit ccd.co.nz and submit your product or system EPDs for inclusion into the National Embodied Carbon Data Repository.

In summary we are open for business and ready to receive submissions from manufacturers and suppliers to the New Zealand construction market who wish to have their data included in the only fully maintained, freely available National Embodied Carbon Data Repository.
