UPDATES TO MASTERSPEC INTUMESCENT PAINT – STEELWORK SECTIONS

Late last year the FPANZ (Fire Protection Association of New Zealand) released the Code of Practice COP-03 Version 1.0, Specification of Application of Intumescent Coatings for the Fire Protection of Structural Steelwork.  

This Code of Practice was created by a working group drawn from the FPANZ Passive Fire Protection Special Interest Group (SIG); contributors include representatives from some major intumescent paint manufacturer’s/suppliers, Auckland City Council, BRANZ, Society of Fire Protection Engineers (NZ Chapter) and the Institute of Fire Engineers (NZ Branch).

Over the next few months, MasterSpec will be reviewing all Intumescent Paint – Steelwork sections and will be carry out amendments to content to align with the new FPANZ Code of Practice.

MasterSpec amendments will include:
  • Qualification clauses, applicators to meet the FPANZ requirements set out in COP clause 6.1 Choice of applicator and inspector. If one or more of the applicator qualification requirements are not met, an accredited third-party coating inspector should be engaged to oversee the project. The COP acknowledges that it may take some time for the industry to fully achieve the qualification requirements.
  • Inspection clauses, Independent Third Party Inspections clause added. This clause is to be used in conjunction with the qualifications clause. 
  • Information required for Code of Compliance clause has been updated to align with COP Appendix C – Intumescent Coating Systems – Regulatory Documents Requirements.
  • Testing – Dry Film Thickness clauses added under 1. General and 3. Execution. Testing to be in accordance with AS 3894.3 and FPANZ COP.  An additional clause has also been added regarding Dry Film Thickness Deficiency Repairs.
  • Environmental Conditions for Painting – Monitoring clause, requirements added for environmental condition monitoring before and after application and at maximum 4 hourly intervals as part of the applicator’s QA documentation.
