Masterspec launch new Open BIM Object standard

27 Nov 2018

Masterspec are pleased to announced the launch of the new Open BIM Object standard.

The intent of the standard is to support the sector’s drive for a more efficient and defined way of working together. It provides a framework for the consistent creation and maintenance of BIM Objects along the entire building lifecycle.

It also complements a number of other existing industry resources, such as the NZ BIM Handbook, the NZ Asset Metadata standard as well as the soon-to-be-released Masterspec Property Selector.

This new standard is the result of several years’ work led by Masterspec (New Zealand) and NATSPEC (Australia) which included multiple rounds of market consultation in New Zealand and Australia. Its completion reflects Masterspec’s commitment to contributing to the development of interoperable digital resources in New Zealand.

THE NEED FOR AN OPEN BIM STANDARD?

The lack of BIM standards has limited the industry’s ability to share digital content across disciplines, projects, and software, both locally and internationally. The situation has meant it’s been possible for two organisations to create content about the same topic that complies with existing BIM standards, but have very different implementations. In addition, many practices develop their own internal standards and are often reluctant to use any content produced by third-parties.

The Open BIM Object Standard (OBOS) project was initiated with a view to helping unlock the potential value these digital systems can bring to the construction sector.

Designed as an open, internationally-based standard, the Open BIM Object standard utilises the buildingSMART IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) schema to facilitate the easy use of various proprietary design tools and their exchange with downstream applications.

The standard with the New Zealand Annexure is freely available from www.masterspec.co.nz/obos as a downloadable PDF or online as an interactive web document.
