NEW (OLD?) AS/NZS 3100:2017 ELECTRICAL STANDARD

24 Oct 2018

AS/NZS 3100:2017 (plus Amend 1) - Approval and test specification - General requirements for electrical equipment, although originally published in January 2017, deliberately and officially does not supersede the old 2009 version until 13 January 2019.  This delayed application gives manufacturers some time to adjust their products to suit the new version of the Standard if necessary.

AS/NZS 3100:2017 sets out general safety requirements related to, equipment (including fittings, accessories, appliances and apparatus) of classes and types for electrical installations in buildings. (Except for appliance to AS/NZS 60335.1 or part 2, unless an approval and test specification refers to AS/NZS 3100).  Major changes from 2009 include the addition of equipment incorporating batteries plus updates on referenced documents and related text.

In preparation for this new standard superseding AS/NZS 3100:2009 on 13 January 2019, Masterspec sections will now refer to the new version as AS/NZS 3100. This replaces the old version referenced as AS/NZS 3100:2009.  Remember, in the Masterspec section 1233 Referenced Documents (1220 General Requirements in Minor) it defines a Standard without a date as "The latest edition (including amendments and provisional editions) at the date of this specification applies unless stated otherwise".  This means that if a Standard has a year after it, it is an old version, most often because that is the version cited in the NZBC Acceptable Solutions etc.
