Updates to Structural Steelwork Sections
The Masterspec steelwork section 3411 STRUCTURAL STEELWORK was originally developed for structural Engineers (or Architects and designers in conjunction with structural Engineers) to specify the average commercial building project. With the increasing pressures of steel quality issues and project complexity, four years ago Masterspec developed 3419 STRUCTURAL STEEL QUALITY CONTROL for structural engineers to provide extra quality control when justified for large, complex or critical projects.
Unlike the 3411 section, 3419 STRUCTURAL STEEL QUALITY CONTROL cannot be used as a standalone section, it is designed to work in conjunction with, and be additional to, 3411. Of course this means the two sections, when used together, will need their customisation coordinated. To further improve the coordination process the following sections have been updated.
3411 STRUCTURAL STEELWORK has been updated mostly with additional guidance notes to aid increased coordination between the two related sections.
3419 STRUCTURAL STEEL QUALITY CONTROL has likewise been updated to aid increased coordination between the two related sections. It has also had further content added to existing clauses, in particular welding supervision, bolt assemblies and tolerances. Hold Point and Notification Point schedules have also been added as aids to improve control and management of critical quality issues.
Standard Changes
Standards NZ have recently amended, superseded or withdrawn a number of related Standards, these include:
Amended
- AS/NZS 1554.3:2014 - Structural Steel Welding - Welding Of Reinforcing Steel: Amendment 1:2017.
- This Amendment applies to Clauses 1.4.13, 1.4.15.1, 1.4.15.2, 3.3.2, 3.3.3, 4.7.3, 5.6, 6.1, 6.5 and 7.3.3, Tables 3.2, 3.3, 4.6(B), 4.7.1(B), 4.7.5, 4.11(A), 4.12.2(A) and 6.2, and Appendices A and F.
- Most of these amendment are relatively minor, with Table F3, Prequalified Transverse End Plate Splice Preparations, for T-joints and Indirect Lap Joints having the most extensive changes.
- There has been no affect on the related Masterspec sections.
Withdrawn
- NZS/BS 4848.2:1991 Specification For Hot-Rolled Structural Steel Sections - Hollow Sections and withdrawn earlier NZS/BS 4848.4:1991 Specification For Hot-Rolled Structural Steel Sections - Equal And Unequal Angles.
- Neither of these Standards have been directly replaced in New Zealand or Australia.
- AS/NZS 3679.1:2016 Structural Steel - Hot Rolled Bars And Sections, is the nearest replacement for NZS/BS 4848.4, and has been used in Masterspec sections to replace it and the outdated Standard BS 4-1.
- Masterspec have not replaced NZS/BS 4848.2 as there is no obvious local replacement and it is only used in a few places.
- However, for cold-formed hollow sections we have added AS/NZS 1163 Cold-Formed Structural Steel Hollow Sections, but if your project needs a high level replacement NZS/BS 4848.2 check out ISO 12633.2:2011.
- In the same effected sections AS 1594 Hot-Rolled Steel Flat Products, has been updated to AS/NZS 1594 with the same name.
